Happy New Year!

As we head into 2018, Pete and I would like to take the opportunity to thank you for all the outstanding support you have given us in 2017 and to reflect on what we have achieved over the past year. It has been such a seminal year for us, in terms of our identity, standard of our beers and how we’ve finally managed how to express ourselves as the brewery we have always wanted to be.

With the new 15BBL brew kit installed at the end of 2016, our focus in 2017 was using its capabilities to produce the highest quality beer we can. Installing a lab, using closed conical fermenters and brewing in larger volumes, allowed us to get the most out of our ingredients and to refine our consistency. We designed new recipes (Kapow!, Push Eject, Boogie Van) and updated our old ones (Lager, Session). In general, more hops and bigger flavours!

The last thing that was missing was how we presented our new and improved beers, step forward the hugely talented, Mr Pete Fowler (Monsterism, Super Furry Animals, Seahawks)! We met with him in early 2017 and, what we thought would be a brief encounter, turned out to be the start of something wonderful… He understood exactly what we were after and produced some outstanding designs that define the character of our beers and the nature of brewery.

With fantastic beer and standout designs, it seemed the natural next step would be to produce cans! Kapow! and Push Eject were the first in line, with these new recipes that were developed for the new kit, we held a very special place for these beers in our hearts.

In July, we had such great support and turn out for our 6th Birthday party. We were so pleased to be able to throw our doors open to such a warm crowd who we could entertain and have a laugh with. I spend a whole day before building “Mario Kart Corner” which was occupied by the happy crowd all day! Plans are already underway for this year’s bash our 7th on the 7th of the 7th…

We were at so many great events and festivals last year. Some highlights include; LCBF (4th-6th Aug), Meatopia (1st-3rd Sept), our Euston Tap Takeover of the East Lodge (10th Aug), London Brewers Market (1st Apr & 25th Nov), Field Day/Mighty Hoopla (June 3rd & 4th), Standon Calling (27th-30th July) and November Rain in 40FT’s brewery yard (11th Nov). We look forward to meeting you at this year’s line up of events!

We also managed to really get our creative side flowing with our inaugural year for the Stooge Project. In April we released our first sours; Dry Hopped: Waimea, Gose and Peach and Basil Sour. In June, we released a variety of Wheat beers; Raspberry, St Clements and Gooseberry Crumble. In late October, we rolled out some Vienna kellerbier; Tea & Biscuits, Blackberry and Oak and Carrot and Orange. And to round the year off, our collection of stout’s; Blueberry, Kingsland Coffee (Hackney Coffee Company Collab) and Black Forest Gateaux. Along with our hop forward Morph series (I - Azacca/Mosaic, II - Cashmere/Loral, III – Mosaic/Equinox), we have had lots of fun creating some special beers and look forward to continuing these projects in 2018.

One last thing that’s led from 2017. We’d like to welcome Boogie Van, our 5.5% West Coast Pale, into our range permanently this year. It’s had a huge reception from you all and we are very happy you like it.

From all the team here at Hackney, we wish you a happy new year and look forward to sharing more great times with you in 2018.

Cheers,
Jon (and Bruce)
